An Exploration of Mixed Media Portraiture on Cardboard
An Exploration of Mixed Media Portraiture on Cardboard
What happens when the surface shifts the conversation?
What happens when the surface shifts the conversation?
Working on cardboard disrupts the routine-making it easier to take risks.
This workshop starts with the face as a reference, then expands into a process-driven exploration where the surface becomes part of the creative conversation.
- Working with layering, cutting, sanding, and rebuilding as core methods
- Allowing the image to emerge through play, disruption, and discovery rather than perfect likeness
- Embracing texture, resistance, and unpredictability as essential elements of the work

Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is for artists who are already creating and building and are curious about what might emerge when the material takes the lead. Whether you are new to portraiture or have an established practice, the most important thing is a willingness to experiment and let the surface influence your image. This workshop begins with the face as a point of reference, but the process is not limited to portraiture, it can translate to any subject matter you feel drawn to explore.
You’ll thrive in this workshop if you are interested in:
-
Working on nontraditional surfaces
-
Layering, reworking, and evolving an image over time
-
Exploring mixed media in a hands-on, direct way
-
Seeing how disruption and experimentation can open new creative directions
No prior experience with cardboard is needed. This workshop is welcoming to beginners, though some familiarity with basic drawing or painting tools may be helpful.
Unlock creativity by simply changing the ground you’re working on.
